Creativity, control, time, and money are the essential aspects of tattoo planning, and they will influence your approach to getting tattooed. As you move through this section, we'll show you how to decide on your own tattoo plan.

Your Tattoo Plan

1.

Your level of personal creativity

How artistically creative are you and how much do you know about what makes artwork tattoo-able? Do you have resources (friends, for example) who can help in this area? Do you know of an artistically creative tattooist you can work with? We can help with that, you can have a free consultation with our artists. While it's always important to find a tattooist who is an expert in the craft of applying ink to skin, it's critical to know that not all tattooists are artistically gifted.

2.

The creative control you're comfortable having and/or relinquishing

How important is it that you have a clear, final picture on a piece of paper of what you will have tattooed, available for you to review before it goes on your skin? Is a general sketch of the design good enough for you to give the "go-ahead" to your tattooist, or do you need to see something much more concrete?

3.

The amount of time and money you are willing to invest in your new ink

Good tattoos will always take some amount of time and money on your part—and the adage here mostly holds true: you get what you pay for. But there are ways to minimize the time that it takes to accurately communicate that tattoo vision you hold in your mind's eye to the tattooist, and there are ways to keep your costs down.

4.

Figure out a tattoo plan that works best for you

At Memu Tattoo, we have developed a framework of approaches to help you figure out a tattoo plan that works best for you based on the above criteria. We've divided them into these distinct categories: personalized, custom, and couture.

5.

Personalized Tattoo Plan

You probably have a very clear idea, most likely a physical, printed example of the tattoo you're looking for, and while you may want to alter elements of the design slightly, you're pretty much happy to have the piece inked on your body as it is. In fact, you may be satisfied creatively by just deciding, "Yup, this is the one!", as well as how large the tattoo will be and where on your body it will be inked.
One of the reasons you don't want to alter the design significantly is that you want a clear idea of what the final product will look like before it is inked on you. Paper and skin are different mediums; nothing on paper will reproduce exactly the same way on skin. With the personalized approach, the end product is as close as it can get to the design reference.
Also, because you're most likely using a design reference also available to others (one you found online, in a book, etc.), you know there will probably be other people in the world with a similar tattoo to you, and you're okay with that. Keep in mind: just because someone used a similar design reference doesn't mean their tattoo will be identical to yours. You can enjoy some level of uniqueness by deciding where on your body the tattoo will go, its size, and some modifications in color and/or line thickness. Also, every tattoo is essentially an original piece of artwork just from being on your skin. The tone and texture of your skin is like no one else's, and the final tattoo won't look exactly the same on anyone else.
Please also note that finding a tattoo design isn't necessarily as easy as selecting a random image online. Some images simply aren't "Tattooable design;" that is, they won't reproduce on your skin in the way you see them on paper or on a computer screen-they would need to be modified in order to work as a tattoo. It's recommended that you find a Tattooable design reference piece one that can be tattooed with the same detail you see on paper and at the size you want it on your skin.
The other factors that inform this plan are time and money. The time involved with this approach is determined primarily by how long it takes you to find your Tattooable design reference. Additional time will be required to select a tattooist who may not be particularly gifted artistically, since that is not necessary, but who is a skilled craftsperson in the trade, we have selected some of the best artists at our studio to save you time looking.
