What You Should Know Before Getting a Tattoo
Getting a tattoo is not something that should be taken lightly. Remember, this isn't a T-shirt with a pithy message than can be removed at the end of the day, tucked in a drawer, or tossed in the trash if the sentiment has been played out. It will be as much a permanent part of you as your limbs. In other words, while removal is possible— it's never desirable!
The Why

but they're not right for everyone.
There are as many reasons to get a tattoo as there are designs. Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but the reasons are numerous-and they go well beyond an impulse made on a crazy night out. While some people get tattoos for the shock value, others use the medium as a way to memorialize something or someone special to them. Some just like the way it looks and get tattooed as a way to beautify their bodies with permanent artwork. Others use tattoos to tell the stories of their life.
So Why Do You Want a Tattoo?
For many, tattoos can act as a "totem." Just as totem poles in Native American culture can represent or identify lineage, cultural beliefs, or notable events (among other things), so too can your tattoos. Let's face it, you're not going to be the same person at forty that you may have been at eighteen (when you decided to get your first tattoo), but if you've chosen well, your ink helps convey the story of your own personal evolution. You might be more accepting of your eighteen-year-old-self's choice if you see that tattoo as your totem or a representation of who you were back then.
